  3. They say it is very emotional in France, but it's not true. It's about passion. We would have followed Bill Hewlett, Dave PAckard and Lew Platt
anywhere. They had our trust and respect. They had normal lives and normal cars. With a European figure of 20% over 18 months (not 15% guys !), twice the worldwide average for a region counting for the majority of sales and profit but never visited by our new CEO, it was clear that Mark Hurd like Carly was here for himself, for what he did at NCR and for price stock. No respect Mister Hurd, unless you learn from your first mistake at HP.

  4. The poor US media coverage is lying about this event.

According to them, Destot (Grenoble mayor) said : "Grenoble needs Hewlett-Packard, but Hewlett-Packard doesn't need Grenoble,"

He never said that ! Instead : "Grenoble needs Hewlett-Packard, but Hewlett-Packard needs Grenoble" which is not the same...

And nobody said that Destot is flying to the US with two employee representatives right now.

    Other coverage :
"Today, we hear that U.S. tech giant, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ - News), is the subject of some degree of French animosity -- though in this case, it's a lot easier to understand the anger. Joined by government officials, a few hundred protestors walked off the job on Friday to show their anger over recently announced job cuts that will shed about 25% of HP's French workforce. News reports of the protests got me wondering: Why is our reaction to this kind of news in the U.S. more often than not a yawn?

Is it because we just don't care? Or is it because we see the silver lining and "over there", they only see the clouds? "

The few hundred are in fact 2000 according to the french police, 2600 for HP unions...
And they are fighting not only for their jobs but also against a strategy going too far, too fast, without any consideration for employees.

Most of other country employee representatives are keeping a low profile so far. It's their choice, but is it the choice of the employees they are representing ?

  5. Would be better if you could publish the article source. I guess it was fool.com, right?
    Here it is: http://www.fool.com/News/mft/2005/mft05091613.htm?ref=foolwatch

The other one (Grenoble needs hp but ...) is not due to the newspaper themselves but to the Associated Press agency which related a pretty deformed story. Arcticles are nothing more then the AP text.

  6. The question is not to leave HP with a big package or to justify job cuts regarding our competitors...The matter is to stop this financial logic which have a global negative impact on our economy (Europe and USA).

  7. this is a small video about HP Grenoble from 1972 to the end of the 90s. A good way to see how HP was when Bill and Dave were still alive...

  8. The deal is simple; if M Hurd review his job cuts strategy in "high cost" country and announce within few weeks a re-investissement where the market is (like Europe with 43% of the WW HP business) it's closed; if not, HP will be a non equity brand, boycott by lots of people and first of all by institutions, governments...All over Europe.
How much market share are you ready to lose Mark? Old Europe is not bluffing now as far as governements wants to fight in their first priority against unemployements and HP will be an example.

  9. I could be...But, you should hear how Europe, especially France and Germany, is being blasted on national TV. Right wing America is of the opinion that both countries should blindly agree to everything the US does and says because the US is always helpful...And Mark Hurd, like Carly support and sponsore the republicain right wing!

  10. I think Mark Hurd have nothing to do with politic; he just wants to cut jobs every year or 2 years as much as he can and all over west of Europe => the business model is DELL for products and eventually to buy a service compagny like Cap Gemini. That's all.

  11. What is the link between a nice place to work and a successful company?

In other words, can a "bad" place to work be a successfull company on the long run? Personnaly I don't believe so.

Customers like dealing with companies they can trust on, they can be loyal to. The first sign of being such a company is the loyalty of employees. This was named HP-way, Carly killed it and Hurd has no idea on what it is.

  12. Chirac seeks to refer HP to EU over job cuts-source

    Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:36 PM ET
    PARIS, Sept 20 (Reuters) -

President Jacques Chirac has asked the French government to refer Hewlett-Packard's (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) plan to cut jobs in France to the European Commission, a source close to the president said on Tuesday. "On the question of the announcement of the reduction in (the number of) workers at the Hewlett-Packard group, he asked the government to pursue all the efforts underway to respond," the source said.
"Given the impact of this plan throughout Europe, he asked the government to refer it to the European Commission," the source added.

Hewlett-Packard plans to cut 1,240 jobs in France by 2008. The U.S. computer giant is also planning to cut jobs in other European countries.

  13. I like this comment "What is the link between a nice place to work and a successful company?"

Why are HP French employe so angry ?

    - Because they're worrying losing their job & $? yes for sure.

    - But also because they have done what big HP asked them to do and even more as NO HP EMPLOYE IS WORKING 35h a week.

Many people, possibly naive, think HP is not only the one giving you money for your job but an entity you can trust as long as you're doing a fair job for this company.

Wrong... This is not the way new HP and other companies are behaving now. No trust, no long term deal; just short term opportunities.
Does HP think they could get better or differently ? HP will be ready to kill its parents and HP way.

Is this contact with employe different across countries ? not necessarily from HP standpoint even if HP has probably some preference and partial analysis on US HP employes.

BUT what is different is employe culture with bad and good consequences; not a judgment.

US HP employes are much more flexible switching from one job to another one, another place and even outside HP. They do their job, that's all; and that's enough.
This is could good in some aspects, less good in others.

Indian HP employes are happy getting a job and are working hard convincing HP to invest there but no loyalty there, at ALL. Already today and even more tommorow HP will suffer from this.

In many countries such as France, HP has recruited people with a given culture & profile that does not fit at all with current HP strategy. HP now wants warriors not human people.

I do think this is a mistake but highly paid people think differently. In my opinion, success requires a good spirit,a teamwork, trust and shared objective. Alternate way would be get results thru fear, terror and pressure.

WW companies as HP prefer individual contributors attitude, some super paid warriors etc...

They will fail long term as confidence, loyalty and not $ are in the heart of real successes.
